Some references only those who follow every trailer can catch. In July 2019, the Brazilian brand O Boticário premiered a commercial to promote the fragrance The Blend. Nothing out of the ordinary so far. What drew attention was a scene in the ad that, to many fans, looked clearly inspired by the Death Stranding trailer shown at The Game Awards 2017.
The comparison started among fans of the game on Reddit and went global when the site MP1st put together a side-by-side of the two scenes. MP1st itself, which published the video below, judged that the brand probably saw the trailer and was inspired by it, and considered it “highly unlikely” that it was a marketing move for the game inside a perfume ad. Neither O Boticário nor Kojima Productions commented on the similarity at the time.
What stands out is the visual weight Death Stranding already had even before launch. The trailers for Hideo Kojima’s game, with enigmatic imagery and a cast that included Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen and Léa Seydoux, were analyzed in detail by the community with each new release, and it was precisely that attentive eye from fans that found the scene in the commercial.
What came next
Death Stranding arrived on PlayStation 4 on November 8, 2019, as the already announced date indicated, and got a PC version on July 14, 2020. The question left from that time, whether we would see any reference to Boticário in Kojima’s game, remained a fun curiosity from that year of waiting for the game.
