Borderlands 3 publisher sends private investigators to YouTuber’s home looking for answers

Take-Two, publisher of Borderlands 3, is accused of sending private investigators to the home of a YouTuber who leaked information about the game.

Take-Two is a giant of the games world; for those who haven’t connected the company’s name to the games it makes, allow me to cite a few: Grand Theft Auto, BioShock, Red Dead Redemption, NBA 2K and Borderlands 3 itself… you can already tell we are talking about a company that has created several “blockbuster” titles and therefore holds enormous prestige and influence in the market.

Recently YouTuber Matt Somers (channel SupMatto) accused the company of sending investigators to his home to question him about information he supposedly should not have had about Borderlands 3. Matt said:

“they showed up at my house, trespassed on my private property and questioned me”

According to Matt, the investigators asked him several questions about his coverage of the Steam database (SteamDB) and about the Rainbow items (their rarity) from the Borderlands 2 DLC Fight for Sanctuary. Matt also explained how he got access to unreleased gameplay videos:

“On April 29, the official Borderlands YouTube channel posted the reveal of the Twitch extension that led to the gameplay reveal … and the names of the test accounts were exposed in that video. That was not found by me.”

Finally, he spoke a little about how he felt about the information being revealed:

“Since I’ve had time to reflect on the situation, I would say emotion got the better of my judgment. As an adult, as someone who has thought about this … it was a very bad thing to do.”

Take-Two also commented on the matter:

“Take-Two and 2K take the security and confidentiality of trade secrets very seriously. The action we took is the result of a 10-month investigation and a history of this creator profiting from violating our policies, leaking confidential information about our product and infringing our copyrights. Not only were many of his actions illegal, but they also negatively impacted the experience of other content creators and of our fans in anticipation of the game.”

Some fans of the Borderlands franchise did not like Take-Two’s intimidation “tactic” and are organizing a boycott of Borderlands 3 under the hashtag #BoycottBoderlands3. For the record, it is not the first time the company has done this: in 2015 Take-Two was also accused of sending private investigators to shut down a modder’s project (people who create modifications for games) that was building a project to allow GTA 5 to be played online by alternative methods. Below is the video where Matt talks about what happened:
