Boy, what a leap into the abyss.
From a game that seemed to have little investment (mostly for not using the likenesses of the actors who have been the face of the heroes for years, causing tremendous strangeness), came a very competent brawler. The problem starts when it sets out to be more than that.
PRO TIP: if you’re going to base your gameplay on online matchmaking, you should focus your game’s development on online matchmaking
The game has had horrible matchmaking quality, with mid-match drops, cancellations, and no option to join matches in progress. The lack of local multiplayer makes the weakness of online multiplayer quite evident. When you can’t play with another human being from the start, nobody will join to fill the spot, and you’re left with a really weak AI. Since you also can’t give simple orders to the AI, the mere fact of being alone on the server already makes you lose some of the (useless) equipment items.
Not that they’re useless within the game: they’re not. But stopping every 15 minutes to check whether your piece of junk is better than the piece of junk that just dropped doesn’t work so well in a game that sets out to be an action game.
Unfortunately, Marvel’s Avengers is yet another movie-franchise game that can be played at the bottom of the drawer.
