Halo Infinite has been a project surrounded by controversy, ranging from crunch (employees being forced to work exhausting hours) to internal difficulties in managing the project. The game was shown at a Microsoft event recently and received a lot of criticism because its visuals fell short of what’s expected from a new console generation. As a result, Microsoft delayed the game to give the development team more time to improve it.
Today Bloomberg reported that Chris Lee, the game’s lead director, has left the project. Lee is the second director of Halo Infinite to leave the project in 2 years (the other was creative director Tim Longo), and that is worrying and shows the project is going through a rather troubled development. For now, according to Bloomberg, Joe Staten (responsible for the creative direction and cinematic scripts of the original trilogy and a franchise veteran) will lead development of the single-player campaign and Pierre Hintze will lead the multiplayer.
About his departure, Chris Lee commented “I have stepped away from Halo Infinite and am looking at future opportunities. I believe in the team and am confident they will make a great game, and now is a good time for me to step away.”
Microsoft also commented on the matter, saying “Chris Lee remains a Microsoft employee and, although he has stepped away from Halo: Infinite for now, we appreciate everything he has done for the project”
Halo Infinite is, for now, scheduled to launch in 2021.
