Come along, because this one is for those who love Runeterra: at the end of October 2020, Riot Games showed the first trailer of Ruined King: A League of Legends Story, a turn-based RPG that takes the League of Legends universe to a format quite different from the MOBA. The game was developed by Airship Syndicate, the studio behind Battle Chasers: Nightwar, directed by Joe Madureira, and published by Riot Forge, Riot’s label for games made with partner studios.
Ruined King had been revealed in 2019, during League of Legends’ 10th anniversary celebration, and the trailer finally showed the party in action. The adventure takes place in two regions: Bilgewater, the pirates’ port city, and the Shadow Isles, cursed by the Black Mist. The team brings together six well-known champions, Illaoi, Miss Fortune, Ahri, Yasuo, Braum and Pyke, who join forces to find the mist’s origin. What a cute and dangerous team at the same time, right?
The combat has a special charm: besides the turns, there is an initiative bar where each ability can be used in the fast, balanced or powerful lane, changing the order of attacks. From Battle Chasers also comes Overcharge, which turns normal attacks into an extra resource to use in place of mana. Exploration is viewed from above, with the party walking through maps and dungeons until it meets enemies. At the time, the release was planned for 2021.
What came next
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Riot only revealed the date on the day itself: Ruined King arrived on November 16, 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, together with Hextech Mayhem, another Riot Forge game. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions came out on March 2, 2023. Critics liked it, with Metacritic scores of 80 on PC, 77 on PS4, 84 on Xbox One and 83 on Switch. Praise went to the art, voices, characters and battle system, and complaints were about technical issues and limited fast travel. My little gamer heart is grateful.
