Since Microsoft’s acquisition of ZeniMax, many have been wondering what it means… so far we have had statements that sometimes suggest exclusives, sometimes suggest selective exclusives (some games will be exclusive to Microsoft platforms, others not), sometimes suggest timed exclusives.
Phil Spencer, the top head of the Xbox division, has already said in an interview that games will be assessed case by case, that is, some will be exclusive and others will not… this week the CFO (Chief Financial Officer) of the Xbox division added more “confusion” to this story. He said:
“We very much encourage cross-platform play, simply from that landscape of, if it is good for the gaming ecosystem, it is good for us, the classic rising tide that lifts all boats. What we are going to do in the long term is that we have no intention of just pulling all Bethesda content from Sony or Nintendo or otherwise. But what we want is for the content, in the long term, to be first or better or pick your differentiated experience, on our platforms. We want Bethesda content to show up in the best way on our platforms.”
“This is not a point about being exclusive. But if you think about something like Game Pass, if it shows up better on Game Pass, that is what we want to see, and we want to drive our Game Pass subscriber base through that Bethesda pipeline.
“So, again, I am not announcing pulling content from platforms one way or another. But I suspect you will continue to see us move toward a first or better or better approach on our platforms.”
Basically he said the main goal is to boost Game Pass, and for that they do not necessarily need to make Bethesda’s games exclusive, but just make sure its games look better and that content arrives earlier on Microsoft’s platforms. It is hard to understand their real intention, so all we can do is wait and see. Personally, I think Bethesda’s games should stay on Microsoft’s platforms, as that would increase its appeal as a whole.
