Cyberpunk 2077 has lighting patterns that can trigger seizures in people with epilepsy

Cyberpunk 2077 has lighting patterns that can trigger seizures in people with epilepsy. See the warning and what CD Projekt did.

People with epilepsy can suffer seizures when exposed to certain light or lighting patterns, which is why it is quite common for TV shows, films and games that feature frantically flashing light effects (especially red and white) to display a notice warning that people with epilepsy may be affected. The editor at GameSpot, Liana Ruppert, who has epilepsy, noticed that Cyberpunk 2077 has several moments (due to its light effects and lighting) that can cause epileptic seizures. Liana herself claims to have suffered a seizure, and she said:

“During my time with Cyberpunk 2077, I suffered a major seizure and felt several moments where I was close to another. I kept going because I made that decision, and I feel that decision helped me create a small guide for players who want to take part in this game .“

“Cyberpunk 2077 is about hedonistic excess. Much like the tabletop game that inspired the open-world RPG, everything is brighter, louder and more in your face. Combine that with the tech interface and some triggers were to be expected.“

Liana points out that the game did not display warnings informing that people with epilepsy could have seizures after playing certain parts of the game. After her article, CD Projekt RED (the game’s developer) responded on its Twitter account.

“Thank you for letting us know about this. We are working on adding a separate warning in the game, in addition to what exists in the EULA. Regarding a permanent solution, the development team is working on it and will implement it as soon as possible.“

We hope the company adds the warning as soon as possible. Liana’s work was exceptional and worthy of applause, not only for drawing attention to a flaw by the company but also for warning other people with epilepsy about the danger of playing the game.
