Look who showed up: on December 9, 2020, the eve of Cyberpunk 2077’s launch, videos of the game running on platforms that CD Projekt RED had not yet shown began popping up online. Until then, the studio had only officially shown the game on the Xbox One X and Xbox Series X, in a special episode of Night City Wire in November.
The video below, from the Cycu1 channel, shows the game on the Xbox Series S, the cheaper and less powerful model of Microsoft’s new generation, captured on a 4K TV, at the start of the Nomad path:
An important detail of the time that many people have forgotten: at launch, the Series S and Series X ran the Xbox One version through backward compatibility. The same went for the PS5, which ran the PS4 version. The native next-generation versions were promised for some time in 2021, with a free upgrade. The Nomad path, which appears in the video, is one of the three life paths the player chooses for V at the start, along with Corpo and Streetkid, and each one changes the starting point: the Nomad starts in the Badlands, outside the city, as an outsider who knows about corporate cargo transport.
Cyberpunk 2077 was the talk of the end of the year: after three delays, the game arrived on December 10, 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Stadia.
What came next
The launch was very rough on last-generation consoles, with bugs and poor performance, especially on the base PS4 and Xbox One. CD Projekt apologized, offered refunds, and Sony pulled the game from the PlayStation Store from December 2020 to June 2021. The native versions for Xbox Series X|S and PS5 were delayed and only came out on February 15, 2022, with a free upgrade for those who had the game on Xbox One or PS4. With many updates and the Phantom Liberty expansion, from September 2023, the game recovered and passed 40 million copies sold by July 2026. What a turnaround, right?
