Some games win you over with their premise, and Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood had a good one: an eco-terrorist werewolf against a corrupt oil company. In December 2020, Nacon published the first gameplay video of the action RPG, with commentary from the developers at French studio Cyanide.
A world of darkness
The game is based on Werewolf: The Apocalypse, White Wolf’s tabletop RPG, and is part of the World of Darkness, the same universe as Vampire: The Masquerade. In this world, vampires, werewolves and other creatures vie for power in secret, hidden among humans. The werewolves, called Garou, are divided into thirteen tribes and see themselves as the “planet’s immune system”, protecting nature. The great enemy is the Wyrm, a force of destruction that easily corrupts humans.
The protagonist is Cahal, of the Fianna tribe, banished from his own tribe, who fights Endron, the oil subsidiary of the Pentex corporation, in the northwestern United States.
Three forms, three ways to play
What stands out in the design is how each of Cahal’s forms has a clear function. As a wolf, he explores, tracks, spies and slips through narrow gaps. As a human, he talks, uses machines and moves around in disguise, with no one suspecting what he is. As a werewolf, he enters combat. A nice detail: the character’s rage rises as he discovers the damage caused by humans, such as pollution and greed. If it overflows, Cahal goes into a frenzy, becomes stronger, but loses the ability to tell enemies from innocents, and only leaves the state after taking down everyone around.
There is also the Penumbra, a place between the physical and spiritual worlds, where the Great Spirit of the Waterfall offers extra quests and rewards.
What came next
Earthblood came out on February 4, 2021 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Critical reception was mixed.
