Sony banned several consoles for violating the PSN terms of use. For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, Sony recently banned consoles that redeemed the games from the PlayStation Plus Collection (a bonus meant only for PlayStation Plus subscribers who bought a PlayStation 5) for several accounts… it worked like this: PlayStation 5 users logged in to the console with other people’s accounts to redeem the games offered to people who had bought the PS5 and, since all the games in the collection also work on the PlayStation 4, this practice “went viral” to the point that PS5 owners started charging to do the redemption for third parties.
Once Sony noticed the practice, it began banning all the consoles (or at least most of them) that did the redemption for third parties. After the ban, the PlayStation 5 can no longer connect to the PSN (the console’s online network) and thus loses a large part of its features and the ability to play online multiplayer games.
A PlayStation 5 owner, unhappy with the ban, took Sony to court and won an injunction forcing Sony to unlock his console… today, Sony complied with the injunction and unlocked the device.
