Kena: Bridge of Spirits got a new trailer in late March 2021, during the Future Games Show: Spring Showcase, a presentation organized by GamesRadar. The video from Ember Lab was a montage combining scenes already seen in previous trailers with new gameplay snippets.
For those who didn’t know the project yet: Kena is a young spirit guide who uses her powers to help the dead pass from the physical world to the spirit world. The game is a third-person action-adventure in which she attacks with a staff, defends herself with an energy pulse and counts on the help of the Rot, small spirit creatures that the player collects and that help solve tasks and fight enemies.
Ember Lab is an independent studio from Los Angeles, founded in 2009 by brothers Mike and Josh Grier, which until then had worked on animation for commercials and apps. The studio became known in 2016 with Terrible Fate, a short film inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Kena was its first game, made with Sony’s support under a console exclusivity deal.
The date at the time was August 24, 2021, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC, via the Epic Games Store. The game had been delayed before: it was planned for late 2020, moved to the first quarter of 2021 because of remote work during the pandemic and got the August date at February’s State of Play.
What came next
In July 2021, Ember Lab delayed Kena once more, to September 21, to have more time for polish. The launch was well received, with praise for the art direction, the soundtrack and the Rot. At The Game Awards 2021, it won the Best Independent Game and Best Debut Indie Game categories. The PC version reached Steam on September 27, 2022, the Xbox versions in August 2024 and the Nintendo Switch 2 version in March 2026.
