Come with me, this one is for those who like a good scare: Resident Evil Village, released on May 7, 2021, debuted straight at number one on the UK weekly physical sales chart, in the week ending May 8. And it was no ordinary debut. It was the second-biggest retail launch of the year in Britain up to that point, behind only Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury.
The numbers showed how sales were split across platforms: 49% of physical copies went to PlayStation 5, 31% to PlayStation 4 and 20% to Xbox consoles. On PS5, it was the console’s third-biggest retail debut, behind Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. On Xbox Series X|S, it was second, behind Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
Within the series itself, the comparison was curious. Physical launch sales were 76% above those of Resident Evil 3 (2020), but 25% below Resident Evil 2 and 40% below Resident Evil 7. Take a look at the week’s top 10:
- Resident Evil Village
- New Pokémon Snap
- FIFA 21
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Minecraft (Switch)
- Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Ring Fit Adventure
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
Village is the sequel to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Ethan Winters looks for his kidnapped daughter in a European village full of creatures, with more action and more enemies than the previous game, without losing the resource scavenging of survival horror.
What came next
