Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate is the most current and complete version of MK11, which was initially released in March 2019.
This version includes all the paid content that could be purchased separately: Kombat Pack 1, Kombat Pack 2 and the new Aftermath expansion.
At this point, the main item to evaluate here is the Aftermath expansion, which brings part 2 of MK11’s story mode and also 3 new characters: Sheeva, Fujin and RoboCop.
In addition, the Aftermath expansion brought back the stage Fatalities, and also the friendly finishers, the Friendships.
In my personal opinion, I am not a big fan of the Mortal Kombat franchise, because I find the characters’ movement very weird and almost all the character animations look very robotic. I understand that this is NetherRealm Studios’ style, that is how they work and it is not going to change. So, patience.
I will not give the game a bad score because of that, but be aware that I am not a fan of the franchise, and I am giving my sincere opinion about the game. Feel free to disagree.
About the game, I played the PlayStation 5 version, which by the way received some free improvements over the old-gen version.
The game now runs at dynamic 4K resolution with HDR, making the image quality very pleasant, and has improved effects and textures, in addition to extremely short loading times.
Cross-generation and cross-family matches were also implemented: PS4 and PS5 can play against each other, while Xbox One and Xbox Series do the same.
Last generation, the cutscenes between story mode matches and the “intros” at the start of each match ran at 30fps, but on PlayStation 5 they are all at 60fps. A plus.
I played both Story Modes and had a blast.
There are those scenes in the style of 80s and 90s action movies, alternating with matches where the player controls several different characters to tell the game’s story. There is no way it could be bad. In this Ultimate version, we have both Part 1, which is the game’s main story, and Part 2, called Aftermath, which was released recently as DLC.
There is an adventure mode called Krypt, but I confess I did not investigate it much. I saw that you have to walk around the map collecting new abilities to access new areas of the map.
Meanwhile, you open chests with various items such as concept art of the characters, the stages and the franchise’s story in general. You also get items to customize the characters’ looks.
There are also two Tower modes (Towers of Time and Klassic Towers) in which you fight your way up floor by floor, and if you reach the end you get a reward. They are usually customization items, coins to spend in the Krypt mode and other items. It is practically the Arcade mode of the old games.
To sum it all up, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate is an excellent fighting game, with extremely beautiful graphics and plenty of characters available in this Ultimate version.
The Fatalities, Fatal Blows and Brutalities are visceral, and this time there are Friendships for those who want to tone down the violence when finishing the opponent.
The guest characters are also pretty cool and will especially please older players: Rambo, RoboCop and the Terminator (straight from the movies) and Joker and Spawn (from the comics).
The game still has plenty of content to unlock, even though it is an “Ultimate Edition”, but most of it is cosmetic items.
At least playing the various modes will be fun for anyone who wants to take on and unlock everything.
I did not test any online matches, since my crappy internet does not help at all in that regard.
