The idea of crossing Sea of Thieves with Pirates of the Caribbean came from Disney

The idea of crossing Sea of Thieves with Pirates of the Caribbean in the A Pirate's Life update came from Disney itself, Rare reveals.

Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life is the newest update to Rare‘s pirate game. What nobody imagined or considered was that the game would bring a campaign with a very special guest appearance: yes, the campaign is a crossover between Sea of Thieves and Pirates of the Caribbean called A Pirate’s Life. The campaign lasts 8 to 12 hours and brings us several iconic characters from Disney’s pirate saga, such as the famous captain Jack Sparrow.

This crossover marks the start of a partnership between Disney and Rare and makes total sense for the game, which will keep its identity… the developers’ idea is to blend the universes while preserving their particularities so that neither side loses its character. Another interesting thing is that the partnership idea came from Disney. See what Sea of Thieves executive producer Joe Neate said:

“Disney came to us and kind of said: ‘Hey, so Sea of Thieves is an amazing pirate game, and we have some amazing pirate worlds. And, instead of spending five years making a game that is basically the same as yours, we’d love to see if there’s a way we can work together. It was a conversation that lit an immediate spark in the studio, partly because many members of the team – Sea of Thieves creative director Mike among them – are big Disney fans, but mainly because Pirates of the Caribbean just felt like a natural fit for Sea of Thieves’ evolving world. Our original document was Pirates of the Caribbean crossed with Wind Waker crossed with The Goonies, right?”

Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life is now available for PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series S|X for Game Pass subscribers.
