Got dumped by your girlfriend or boyfriend and feeling down? In July 2021, Square Enix had at least one distraction to offer: from July 29 to August 1, Marvel’s Avengers was free to play on PlayStation 4, on PC via Steam, and on Google Stadia (yes, on Stadia too).

On Steam, the game’s page showed the “Play for free!” button during the period, and those who liked the experience found the game on sale, in a promotion running until August 11.

The game from Crystal Dynamics, published by Square Enix, had come out on September 4, 2020 and got PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions in March 2021. The story begins at A-Day, an Avengers celebration day that ends in tragedy after an attack. Blamed for the disaster, the team disbands, and the company A.I.M. takes its place. Five years later, it is up to the teenage Inhuman Kamala Khan, Ms. Marvel, to bring the heroes together again.

And let us make it clear: there are some famous guys like Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Captain America and Black Widow in the story, but the one in charge of the campaign is Kamala. After launch, Kate Bishop and Clint Barton, the two Hawkeyes, arrived for free, and the campaign could be played solo or in co-op with up to four people.

What came next

Right after the free weekend, in August 2021, Black Panther joined the roster, and in November it was Spider-Man’s turn, exclusive to the PlayStation versions. Even so, the game received mixed reviews, which praised the story and combat but pointed to repetition, lack of content and technical problems. With about 3 million copies sold, it fell short of expectations. Crystal Dynamics’ support ended in September 2023, and the game was removed from digital stores that same month.
