Death Stranding sold more than five million copies worldwide as of March 2021, adding up the PlayStation 4 and PC versions. The figure was revealed in July 2021 by Jay Boor, head of publishing at Kojima Productions, in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz.
According to Boor, the studio’s first game “performed very well” in terms of sales. “As of March 2021, Death Stranding has sold over five million units worldwide on PlayStation 4 and PC,” he said.
The conversation also covered the Director’s Cut, the PlayStation 5 version set for September 2021. Boor explained that the heart of the game is the Social Strand System, an asynchronous multiplayer that connects players around the world through various in-game actions, without them meeting directly. The Director’s Cut would expand this system and also bring new features, weapons and modes, plus visual and performance improvements.
For context: Death Stranding was Kojima Productions’ first game after Hideo Kojima left Konami in 2015. The game came out for PlayStation 4 on November 8, 2019, published by Sony, and got a PC version on July 14, 2020, published by 505 Games. Reception was generally positive, with praise for the performances, soundtrack and visuals, and more divided opinions on gameplay and story. In 2019, it was the game that won the most Game of the Year awards.
What came next
The Director’s Cut came out for PlayStation 5 in September 2021 and reached PC in March 2022. Then came versions for iPhone, iPad and Mac in January 2024, and for Xbox Series X|S in November 2024. The sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, was released on June 26, 2025 for PlayStation 5.
