Numbers first: three games, available from August 3, 2021, and one of them with an expiration date. On August 2, Sony announced on the PlayStation Blog the month’s additions to PlayStation Now: NieR: Automata, Ghostrunner and Undertale. NieR would stay in the catalog for a limited time, until November 1, 2021.
Translating the jargon: PS Now was Sony’s subscription service with PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 games via streaming, playable on PS4, PS5 and Windows computers. PS2 and PS4 games could also be downloaded to run locally on the consoles, without depending on the connection all the time.
NieR: Automata
A 2017 action RPG from PlatinumGames, published by Square Enix and created by Yoko Taro. The androids 2B, 9S and A2 fight in a war against machines created by aliens, and the story requires multiple playthroughs to be fully revealed. The fast combat, a PlatinumGames specialty, mixes hack and slash with spaceship sections and even text adventure.
Ghostrunner
A 2020 first-person action game with parkour and sword combat in a tower city. The rule is simple and cruel: one hit kills, both enemies and you. In practice, this means repeating sections until you nail the perfect sequence of runs, jumps and slashes.
Undertale
The 2015 RPG by Toby Fox, who did almost everything himself, including the script and soundtrack. A child falls into the Underground, a world of monsters, and battles use bullet hell-style attacks. The detail that made it famous: you can spare enemies instead of killing them, and these choices change dialogue, characters and story.
What came next
Ghostrunner got PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions in September 2021 and the sequel Ghostrunner 2 in October 2023. PS Now, meanwhile, ceased to exist as a separate service between May and June 2022, when PlayStation Plus gained new subscription tiers and streaming was folded into the Premium plan.
