Sonic Frontiers promised to change a lot from the hedgehog’s previous games, and a new SEGA trailer, published in September 2022, showed how. The video gave an overview of the open-world gameplay, the combat system, the puzzles and other features.
In the story, Sonic and his friends go to the Starfall Islands in search of the Chaos Emeralds and end up sucked through a wormhole into an artificial, digital dimension called Cyber Space. Sonic manages to escape back to the islands, but has to find out the truth about this mysterious place while looking for a way to free his friends, defeating the Titans that rule the region.

The islands mix flowery fields, forests, ancient ruins and deserts. Sonic keeps what he has always done well, like running at high speed, collecting rings, grinding on rails and homing-attacking enemies, and gains new abilities: combat moves, wall running and the Cyloop, a trail of light he draws around objects and enemies to interact with them. The challenges scattered across the map test platforming, puzzles and combat, and are the path to collecting the Emeralds.
The idea at Sonic Team, according to studio head Takashi Iizuka, was for Frontiers to serve as a template for the series’ next games, as Sonic Adventure did in 1998. The game was set for November 8, 2022, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC.
What came next
Sonic Frontiers came out on the planned date and was received generally positively, with praise for the visuals, story and soundtrack and criticism of technical problems. Among fans, reception was even better. The game was a commercial success, with five million copies sold, and on June 23, 2026 it got a Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2, on the series’ 35th anniversary.
