Discord is officially restricted in Brazil.
Following an emotional appeal from the most excellent First Lady Janja da Silva about a crime that allegedly took place on a Discord livestream, the app now has its camera and screen sharing features completely banned for use in Brazil.
The problem?
It happened on an Instagram livestream.
Below is the statement from Discord co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy:
A letter to the Discord community in Brazil
You have probably heard about an order from Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) requiring the suspension, in the country, of the screen sharing and video features.
We are complying with the order and working in good faith with the ANPD. As a result, screen sharing and video call features will be unavailable to users in Brazil as of now. We are working to restore access to these important features as soon as possible.
This is a serious situation. The order follows a devastating case involving the death of a teenager, after a coordinated campaign of extreme violence carried out across multiple platforms. We work every day to keep these individuals off our platform and to make Discord safer for teens. We have collaborated and continue to collaborate with law enforcement in this case.
We know how important these affected features are to our community in Brazil. Gamers, developers, small businesses and communities of all kinds across the country use Discord to connect and collaborate. Friends use video calls to spend time together and share their screens for many reasons, including simply to enjoy moments together and show each other what they are playing.
What continues to work
Discord remains available in Brazil. The order focuses on video features, but you will still have access to the following features:
- Direct messages (DMs) and group direct messages
- Servers of all sizes
- Voice channels and audio-only calls
- All other Discord features that don’t depend on video or screen sharing
In short: Discord is still here for you, and we are working to restore these features as soon as possible. We remain committed to our community in Brazil, just as we know it is committed to Discord.
Thank you for your support
We are a small company compared with many of the big global communication platforms, and Discord is still less well known to many lawmakers and regulators. For those who have never used Discord personally, it can be hard to grasp the diversity of ways in which the platform is part of our community’s daily life.
That’s why we have a request for our Brazilian community. If Discord has helped you keep in touch with friends, find a community or, if you run a business of any size and use Discord to manage your own community, share your story on the platforms you use and tag us so we find out. We need your voice to show the full picture of how Discord is used in Brazil.
Your continued support means everything to us. We remain committed to our community in Brazil and to working constructively with Brazilian authorities.
Thank you for staying with us. We will keep you informed about next steps.
