For the first time ever, gaming PC hardware market passes 30 billion dollars

The gaming PC hardware market passed 30 billion dollars for the first time in 2016, even as home PC sales fall, according to Jon Peddie Research.

Every year we see news that the home PC market is shrinking. However, the market for gaming PCs is growing at an accelerated pace.

In 2016, the segment surpassed for the first time in history the mark of 30 billion dollars in sales. The forecast was that this mark would only be reached in 2018. The market is growing faster than expected.
Jon Peddie Research, the institute responsible for the study, divided sales into 3 segments: entry-level, mid-range and high-end, basically entry-level, intermediate and high-performance hardware.

“Although the high-end segment is the largest and accounts for more than 13 billion of the market, companies are not forgetting gamers with less purchasing power, with good launches like the GTX 1050,” said the institute’s president. This statement is in line with AMD’s strategy of releasing graphics cards first for the entry-level and mid-range markets. Combined, the two markets add up to more than 17 billion dollars.

Sales have grown most in Asia/Pacific, but the high-end segment is still dominated by the US/Europe.

The study was conducted in 33 countries.
