Japanese Yoshi likes sashimi

Japanese Yoshi likes sashimi: a look at differences between Western and Eastern versions of Nintendo games, from cultural adaptations to small details.

We have all heard about differences between Western and Eastern versions of games, sometimes cultural adaptations, other times adjustments to the level of violence and things like that, but the most interesting thing is that such a simple difference in such a classic game went unnoticed for so long.

In Super Mario World, the biggest innovation since Mario had learned to fly was the introduction of his companion Yoshi, the green dinosaur who could devour enemies. Even so, Yoshi couldn’t devour every kind of creature, but what no one had noticed was that a difference in the Japanese version allowed him to devour even a certain ally.

Obviously we all know about a big cultural difference in food that used to exist between West and East. Many heard in horror about how a people could eat raw fish, something that today has softened and even found its place in our own culture.
In one of the secret levels, Yoshi showed his great appreciation for devouring raw sea creatures (okay, they weren’t fish), which ended up being cut from the American version of the game.
