About a month before the launch of The Ringed City, the second and final Dark Souls III DLC, a video of a boss fight from the expansion appeared on YouTube in late February 2017. The recording of the fight is in the video below. For anyone who, like me, was counting the days to return to this world, it was quite the appetizer.

What the recording showed was a multi-stage fight. After jumping off a cliff, the player was attacked by a creature that early reports called “Crimson Bat”, and soon a second enemy, the Demon from Below, joined the fray. According to descriptions released at the time by PCGamesN, defeating the first creature made the Demon from Below transform into the Demon Prince, a much stronger version. The original video went offline shortly after, but the description matched what made it into the final game: the fight against the Demon Prince is one of the expansion’s bosses.

Before the leak, Bandai Namco had already shown the DLC officially in a gameplay trailer, with new areas, enemies and a longer look at a boss. According to the official material, The Ringed City brought new enemies, gear, weapons and spells, and was part of the Dark Souls III Season Pass.

What came next

The Ringed City was released on March 28, 2017 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. The expansion sends the player after Slave Knight Gael, a character introduced in the first DLC, Ashes of Ariandel, to the Dreg Heap, a collapsed landscape where ruined kingdoms from different eras have converged, and then to the Ringed City itself. Gael closes out the expansion.

Critics received it well: Metacritic recorded an 82 average on PC and PS4 and 85 on Xbox One, and many people saw the DLC as a fitting farewell to the trilogy.
