Listen up: Microsoft’s backward compatibility, which lets you run Xbox 360 games on the Xbox One, gained four more names in early March 2017. The announcement came through Major Nelson’s Twitter, as was usual at the time.

The four of the moment:

  • Dead Rising 2: Case Zero
  • Dead Rising 2: Case West
  • Meet the Robinsons
  • Cars 2: The Video Game

For zombie fans, the two Dead Rising games were the highlight. Case Zero is the prologue to Dead Rising 2: Chuck Greene and his daughter Katey, who was infected, have just escaped the Las Vegas outbreak and are stuck in the small town of Still Creek, where the player has to gather motorcycle parts before the military arrives. Case West comes after the main campaign and teams Chuck with reporter Frank West, the hero of the first game, in an investigation of Phenotrans, the company behind the mess in Fortune City. They are short games, originally released as Xbox Live Arcade titles, but with the feel of the main series.

And there was a cool detail: with these two, the entire Dead Rising series became playable on Xbox One, since Dead Rising, Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 2: Off the Record had gotten remastered versions for the console the year before.

The other two are from Disney and aimed at kids. In Meet the Robinsons, based on the animated film, you help Wilbur Robinson fix the future by traveling to the past. Cars 2 puts Lightning McQueen and the gang in races with combat and a spy story.

Anyone who already had one of these games in digital format on the Xbox 360 saw the game appear automatically in their Xbox One library, without paying anything new.

What came next

Backward compatibility debuted with 104 Xbox 360 games and later also gained support for original Xbox games. The program kept growing until November 2021, when Microsoft released a last batch of 76 games and warned that it had reached the limit due to licensing, legal and technical constraints.
