Listen up: Aaron Greenberg, one of Xbox’s marketing chiefs, said on Twitter that Phantom Dust would be available the next day, free, for Xbox One and Windows 10. The remaster was released on May 16, 2017, and the price really was zero.
For those who don’t remember, Phantom Dust is a cult classic of the original Xbox. It was developed by Microsoft Game Studios Japan, directed and produced by Yukio Futatsugi, and released in Japan on September 23, 2004 and in North America on March 15, 2005. The mix was unlike anything else: arena action with strategy and collectible card game elements, in which you build your arsenal of abilities before the fight. Multiplayer worked in split screen, System Link or Xbox Live.
Critics liked it, with an average of 81 on Metacritic, but sales were very low: about 6,000 copies in Japan and 50,000 in North America. That is why the game became a cult favorite, the kind that few people played and those who did never forget.
And the story of the comeback had drama. At E3 2014, Microsoft announced a reboot for Xbox One, handed to Darkside Game Studios with a budget of US$ 5 million. The project fell apart in February 2015, when Microsoft released no more money despite having asked for a bigger scope; about US$ 2 million had already been spent and the studio closed its doors. The way out was different: instead of a new game, a remaster of the original, made by Code Mystics, with graphics and other elements redone for higher resolutions.
