Review of Mimic Hunter on PC: a hardcore 2.5D platformer with nice art and music, but broken hitboxes and imprecise controls. Version tested on Steam.

Mimic Hunter is a hardcore 2.5D platformer that puts you in the skin of the “RAT” Monsieur Ratimousse, a legendary master hunter, who sets off on a journey to find his old mentor Barnabas and stop a demonic force from devouring the world.

Our game of the moment has a somewhat confusing start. Right at the beginning the first level leaves you quite confused, with window games in a tower, which you have to enter and exit, teleporting you up or down, until you solve a certain puzzle in the game, and the only information you have is the controls and nothing else. And with your mentor interrupting you several times with dialogue boxes and pausing the game, which is something that could have been replaced by a voice in the background.

Graphics

Graphically the game looks very good and is pleasing to the eye, with vivid colors and well-detailed objects for a 2.5D game. All of this gives it a certain charm; the rotating 2.5D tower is very interesting and different. The setting gives the game a very macabre tone with a touch of darkness. The enemies are well made and detailed, like safes and coin bags, which have an animation when killed, and are a true hell.

Audio and soundtrack

The music in Mimic Hunter, in turn, turns out to be quite pleasant. The music (apart from the main theme) fits the game’s theme very well and helps set the mood, although the sound effects could still be improved. But the whole chaotic and macabre atmosphere of the game fits perfectly into the mood the theme tries to convey.

Gameplay

In this part, we need to talk: the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired, something that makes you not want to play for very long. There are only a few buttons, but patience is needed. For a game that relies heavily on platforming as one of its main gameplay elements, you would imagine the developers had perfected the jump in the game, but the game is the complete opposite. The hitboxes are completely broken (several times during gameplay I took damage through a wall or from the enemy on the floor below seeing me, physical damage). If an enemy attacks you while you are under a piece of stone, then you are essentially paralyzed and you can only attack. If 2 or more enemies attack you when you are stuck like that, you will certainly die, because you are paralyzed. I tested with a keyboard, then moved to the controller plugged into the PC (Xbox ONE controller). I got a small improvement, but even so movement and jumps remained slow, and the attack also didn’t damage the enemies and the jumps were very imprecise.

Conclusion

Mimic Hunter is a beautiful and acceptable game for platformer lovers who like a good difficulty to get through the levels. It has a good soundtrack and good graphics, but its controls, hitbox and some broken parts must be improved as soon as possible, in order to have a more attractive replay factor.
