Come along, because this surprise is as cute as it is blocky! On the night of May 29, 2018 in Brazil, already May 30 in Japan, The Pokémon Company revealed Pokémon Quest, an action RPG for Nintendo Switch and mobile phones. And it had nothing to do with what everyone was expecting from that press conference.
Check out how adorable: in Pokémon Quest, all the little monsters are cube-shaped, in a blocky look reminiscent of Minecraft. The adventure takes place on Tumblecube Island, and the player builds a base, forms a team of up to three Pokémon and heads out on expeditions to explore the island. To attract new companions, you cook dishes with the ingredients found along the way, almost a little recipe for each type of Pokémon. Only the 151 from the first generation, Kanto, appear.
The game was announced as free to start. In practice, expeditions use up energy that recharges over time or with PM Tickets, the game’s currency, and there are optional paid packs. It is also the first Pokémon spin-off made entirely by Game Freak itself.
And the best part for those who had a Switch: the game came out on the eShop the same day as the announcement. Mobile phones came later.
What came next
The iOS and Android version arrived on June 27, 2018. In its first week, Pokémon Quest passed 7.5 million downloads, and by the end of 2018 it had topped 10 million on mobile alone. Critics were divided: they praised the team building but found the battles repetitive and nearly automatic, and many agreed the game suited mobile better than the Switch. Even so, my little gamer heart keeps a soft spot for these blocky Pokémon.
