Come along, because this detective story had a happy ending: in early November 2018, PUBG Corp. had not yet confirmed PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on the PS4, but players found clues on Sony’s servers. Game icons and a product ID for the PS4 version appeared, shared on the ResetEra forum.
Until then, the battle royale had been on PC since 2017 and, on consoles, only existed on Xbox One, where it came out in early access in December 2017 and got its full release in September 2018. So every sign of a PlayStation version got the community a little excited.
Analyst Daniel Ahmad, of Niko Partners, known for anticipating industry information, said the launch on Sony’s console would be in December, and that the announcement could happen at The Game Awards, scheduled for December 6, 2018.
What came next
The confirmation came earlier than expected. In November 2018, the game’s publisher announced PUBG for PS4 on December 7, with the Erangel, Miramar and Sanhok maps. The version included exclusive items: an outfit of Nathan Drake from Uncharted and Ellie’s backpack from The Last of Us, what a cute crossover. Playing online required PlayStation Plus.
And The Game Awards ended up serving another piece of news: Vikendi, the snow map, was revealed at the ceremony. Years later, on January 12, 2022, the game went free-to-play on all platforms under the name PUBG: Battlegrounds, with an optional paid upgrade, Battlegrounds Plus, which unlocks modes such as ranked matches. Those who had bought the game before received that upgrade for free.
