Adam Kiciński, co-CEO of CD Projekt RED, said in a financial report that the game did not sell as well as expected. He said:
“The game attracted the community, which raised our expectations for sales. Unfortunately, so far, those expectations have not been met. We are still optimistic… We expect to keep selling Thronebreaker for many years, even if the initial period did not meet our initial expectations. GOG’s reach is incomparably smaller than Steam’s”
Thronebreaker, previously announced as a GOG exclusive (GOG is an online game store similar to Steam, owned by CD Projekt Red), suddenly appeared on Steam, and judging by the co-CEO’s statement, the reason it went to Steam was low sales. Regarding the announcement of other tales in the universe of The Witcher, Adam said:
“As for other stories in The Witcher Tales, we haven’t made any announcement about that. Of course, depending on Thronebreaker’s results – I assume it will continue to positively affect our bottom line; it is obviously not a financial failure, it’s just that our expectations are very high – these factors will be considered when making decisions about future releases of this kind, but it’s too early to provide any details. ”
The co-CEO also added some information regarding Gwent (a card game whose system inspired the card combat in Thronebreaker): “We will continue our work on Gwent. We consider it a strategic project: beyond business expectations, we also treat the game as an experience that precedes other multiplayer products of this kind”.
For those who don’t know Thronebreaker, which was originally going to be a campaign for Gwent, below is the game’s trailer, which according to Eurogamer has a strong storyline with more than 30 hours of campaign.
