The available details were few: a short teaser, no official name and one phrase. At The Game Awards 2018, BioWare showed the first video of the next game in the Dragon Age series, which fans started calling Dragon Age 4, and closed with the words “The Dread Wolf Rises”.
Translating the series jargon: for anyone who played Dragon Age: Inquisition, the phrase left no doubt. “Dread Wolf” is how Flemeth refers to Solas, the elven mage who accompanies the Inquisitor and who is revealed to be Fen’Harel, the elven god of betrayal. The teaser therefore indicated that the sequel would pick up directly from the events of Inquisition and put Solas at the center of the story. Check out the video:
In practice, the announcement served more to confirm that the franchise was alive than to show the game. BioWare did not confirm a title, platforms or a release window, and the press assessment at the time was that the launch was still years away.
What came next
The press got it right. Development already had a complicated history: the project began in 2015 under the codename Joplin, was cancelled in October 2017 and restarted in 2018 as Morrison, initially conceived as a live-service game. After the success of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and the weak reception of Anthem, EA changed course, and the online component was cut in February 2021.
The game was announced as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf in June 2022 and renamed Dragon Age: The Veilguard in June 2024. It launched on October 31, 2024 for PlayStation 5, PC and Xbox Series X|S, with Metacritic scores between 76 and 85 and the biggest launch ever for a BioWare game on Steam. Sales numbers, however, fell far short: according to EA, 1.5 million players in the three months to December 31, 2024, nearly half below expectations. On January 29, 2025, BioWare was restructured to focus on the next Mass Effect.
