Some trailers are worth it for the date, and some for the attitude: the one for Rage 2 at The Game Awards 2018 had both. During the ceremony, in December, Bethesda confirmed that the game would arrive on May 14, 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, and showed a teaser and a gameplay trailer.
What stands out is the partnership behind the project. Rage 2 brought together id Software, creator of Doom and the first Rage, with Avalanche Studios, known for the explosive open worlds of the Just Cause series. In practice, the idea was to join id’s fast, heavy gunplay with Avalanche’s freedom of exploration, in a post-apocalyptic wasteland full of vehicles, gangs and mutants. A nice detail: instead of the brown tones common to the genre, the art direction bet on vivid colors, with lots of pink and neon, to give the end of the world a punk, cheeky look. Check out the trailer shown at the ceremony:
The game’s existence had been known since May 2018, when a Walmart Canada page leaked the title early. Bethesda made the official announcement on May 14, 2018, exactly one year before the release date revealed at the Game Awards.
What came next
Rage 2 kept its date and came out on May 14, 2019 on all three platforms, later reaching Google Stadia on November 19 of the same year. Reception was mixed: Metacritic scores of 73 on PC, 72 on Xbox One and 67 on PS4. Critics praised the combat but complained about the story, the characters and the open world. In sales, the game topped UK physical charts in its launch week, though with only 25% of the physical sales the first Rage had at launch. You can see the care in the shooting, which remains the best reason to visit this wasteland.
