More Raccoon City: in February 2019, Capcom showed two new images of The Ghost Survivors, the free mode for the Resident Evil 2 remake. The idea is a “what if”: Leon and Claire escaped the nightmare, but many people were left behind, and the mode lets you play as some of those characters in alternate scenarios in which they have a chance to survive.
The images highlighted Katherine Warren, the mayor’s daughter, whose tragic ending appears in Claire’s campaign. Alongside her at the mode’s launch were Robert Kendo, owner of the famous gun shop that Leon visits, and Ghost, a mysterious special-ops soldier of the same kind as Hunk.
Each one has a mission. In “No Time to Mourn”, Kendo must go from the shop to the water purification room in the sewers to reach a rescue helicopter. In “Runaway”, Katherine goes from the orphanage to the cells of the police station to save her boyfriend, Ben. In “Forgotten Soldier”, Ghost races to the laboratory tram before the self-destruct.
The mode also brings new things compared with The 4th Survivor: special zombie types, zombies with backpacks that can be looted, and supply machines where you pick one of three items. It even has its own records, which unlock cosmetic hats. The release was set for February 15, 2019.
What came next
The Ghost Survivors arrived on the date, for free, and got a fourth scenario, “No Way Out”, unlocked by finishing the main story: in it, Sheriff Daniel Cortini has to withstand waves of zombies at a gas station and take out 100 of them until Leon rescues him. The Resident Evil 2 remake became the best-selling game in the series, with more than 20 million copies as of September 2026.
