Listen up: on February 15, 2019, three weeks after the launch of the Resident Evil 2 remake, Capcom released The Ghost Survivors for free, an extra mode with alternate stories of characters who do not survive the hellish night in Raccoon City. Promise made, promise kept, and no charge to those who already had the game.
The idea is simple and very good: what if the people we see die in the campaign had had a chance? The first batch came with three scenarios, each character with their own weapons:
- No Time to Mourn: Robert Kendo, the gun shop owner who appears briefly in Leon’s campaign, crosses the sewers to reach a helicopter;
- Runaway: Katherine Warren, the mayor’s daughter, who in Claire’s campaign appears lying on a table in the orphanage, tries to flee to save her boyfriend;
- Forgotten Soldier: Ghost, an elite Umbrella soldier, races against time to the laboratory’s cable car before the self-destruct.
Capcom said the mode would be expanded with more episodes, imagining alternate realities and happier endings for characters from the Resident Evil 2 universe. For those who like a challenge, it is the kind of content to play many times, each run a race against zombies with a character who, in the official story, did not have the same luck.
What came next
The fourth scenario, No Way Out, unlocks after clearing the campaign, with Sheriff Daniel Cortini defending a gas station against 100 zombies. The game hit hard: 3 million copies shipped in the first week, 4 million in the first month and, by September 2026, more than 20 million, the best-selling Resident Evil ever. It got a PS5 and Xbox Series version on June 13, 2022 and a Switch 2 version announced for October 16, 2026. Time to face Raccoon City again.
