The Ni no Kuni series has always had that classic cartoon look, and the sequel followed the same path. In March 2019, Bandai Namco and Level-5 showed a new trailer for Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom with the content arriving on March 19. The highlight was The Tale of a Timeless Tome, the game’s second major DLC, with a new story, new dungeons, extra challenges and new special abilities. The promise was to please mainly those who had played the first game in the series. Watch the trailer:

Ni no Kuni II came out on March 23, 2018 for PlayStation 4 and PC, as the sequel to Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. The story follows Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum, a young king who loses his castle in a coup and sets out to build a new kingdom, alongside Roland, a president from our world who appears rejuvenated in Ni no Kuni. Besides the battles, the player takes care of building and managing Evan’s kingdom.

Those who lived through the era of Studio Ghibli films will recognize the signature: the character design is by Yoshiyuki Momose, ex-Ghibli, and the music is by Joe Hisaishi, both from the first game. The March pack closed out the post-launch content plan: the first DLC had come out on August 9, 2018 and the second, The Lair of the Lost Lord, on December 13, 2018, which makes The Tale of a Timeless Tome the third pack and the second large one.

What came next

The DLCs were gathered in the Prince’s Edition, released for Nintendo Switch on September 17, 2021. On March 21, 2023, the game also came to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
