It’s here: at the March 12, 2019 Inside Xbox, after a series of teases, Microsoft confirmed that Halo: The Master Chief Collection was coming to PC. And not only on the Microsoft Store: the collection would also be on Steam, which for many people was the most surprising part. Check out the announcement trailer:
For those who do not know it, the collection came out in 2014 on Xbox One and brings together Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST and Halo 4. In the announcement, one more joined the party: Halo: Reach, which was not yet part of the package and became part of it.
The PC release would be in parts, with each game arriving as a separate add-on. The first would be Halo: Reach, and then the others in the story’s chronological order, starting with Combat Evolved Anniversary. The port had help from Splash Damage and Ruffian Games. And there is a fun bit: right after the announcement, 343 Industries’ offices in Redmond were flooded with pizzas ordered by anonymous fans, mainly from Reddit, in a more than lively celebration.
What came next
Halo: Reach arrived on Steam and the Microsoft Store on December 3, 2019, at the same time as on Xbox One. The others came throughout 2020, and the last was Halo 4, on November 17, 2020. A detail for those who like playing together: on PC the collection has no split screen, but online co-op works with Steam and Xbox friends. The collection also became famous for its achievement numbers: it reached 7,000 Gamerscore with 700 achievements, still the Xbox achievement record.
