BioWare has not been successful with its latest games. Mass Effect Andromeda was heavily criticized by fans for its very weak facial expressions and excess of bugs… Anthem, its latest release, has several flaws, both in the game system itself and on the technical side (the game even made some consoles shut down completely), and besides that it went through a quite troubled development, as explained in this article by Kotaku.
BioWare committed to fixing the game and “making it the game fans hoped it would be” through updates to fix errors, bugs, loading and game systems. So far so good, since that is the minimum expected of a decent company, but unfortunately I don’t know whether the promises will be kept, because recently Michael Gamble (a member of the game’s development team) said that BioWare is now concentrated on Dragon Age 4 and so most of the studio is working on that project, including part of the team responsible for Anthem. In other words, with less manpower dedicated to fixing the game’s errors, we can already say, without much beating around the bush, that updates will take longer to be released, which is a terrible sign, since the new content has already been delayed (indefinitely), precisely with the promise of focusing on bug-fix updates.
The game’s community was extremely frustrated and disappointed with the news; some are asking for refunds, claiming misleading advertising, while others question the supposed 10-year support promised by the company (since not even a year has passed and, besides the new content having been delayed indefinitely, part of the team is no longer working on the updates). The situation is tense and raises suspicions about the game’s future, since BioWare has already shown itself capable of abandoning a game, even without leaving it “working as it should”, in favor of developing another. The situation even recalls what happened with Mass Effect Andromeda, which received fix updates up to a point and then BioWare itself announced it would no longer try to fix the game.
