SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) president Shawn Layden talked a bit about the “philosophy” that governs Sony’s first-party studios. According to Layden, the studios are encouraged to experiment, seek and take risks by betting on differentiated experiences. He also stated that learning from failures and mistakes is part of their internal culture. Layden said:
“The games industry embraces creativity, innovation, entertainment and technology in unique ways. Our fans are enthusiastic, passionate, focused and extremely demanding. We empower our development studios to constantly break the barriers of games by giving them the opportunity to experiment and explore. They are encouraged to take risks.”
After saying the words above, Layden used Sucker Punch as an example: when presenting the idea for a new game to better explore the extra power of the PS4 PRO, it was encouraged by Sony to make a new Infamous, but the developer had another project in mind, so Sony chose to leave the choice up to them… and that is how the development of Ghost of Tsushima began.
“We allow a culture that learns from mistakes and failures. As leaders, we encourage creators to act fearlessly and share new ideas. We try to be available and friendly. If we build space for creativity and for people with new and unique perspectives our future will be brighter. We will innovate more. We will make more impact on a larger number of people. And they will be here, on this stage, one day, speaking to future generations.”
An interesting and in a way even bold philosophy, for allowing failures. What do you think of what was said?
