Gears 5 will be released on September 10, 2019, as Microsoft’s next big launch. Rod Fergusson, head of the studio, said in an interview that with Gears 5 the team chose to go “beyond” instead of playing it “safe” as they did with Gears of War 4. According to him, the team that worked on the previous game was still inexperienced in developing the series, being a completely new team, and so they chose to stay faithful to what worked in the series without trying to innovate.
“We looked at it like, OK, let’s stay true to what Gears is and not mess with it too much. We didn’t want people to think, ‘Well, they don’t know what they’re doing.’”
Fortunately, The Coalition listened to the feedback from fans (who asked the team to go further, innovating and taking more risks) and now, with a more experienced and confident team, decided it was time to do that. Here is what Rod Fergusson said:
“The feedback we got was, ‘There’s not enough innovation here.’ We took that feedback as, ‘We trust you, please do it.’ And we brought that to Gears 5. We’re really trying to find new ways to play with the formula and not be just a corridor shooter.”
