Come with me and I’ll tell you about the first peek at the most compact mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. In July 2019, Activision released the first gameplay footage of Gunfight, a new mode in Infinity Ward’s game, recorded by streamers invited to try the multiplayer before launch.
Gunfight’s idea is cute in its simplicity, despite the shooting: two duos face off on small maps, in very short 40-second rounds. With only four players in the match, every move counts, and coordination with your partner is worth more than running off on your own. It was quite a contrast with the series’ traditional modes, full of people and explosions everywhere.
This Modern Warfare was also special for another reason: it worked as a restart of the Modern Warfare sub-series, with Captain John Price back, now played by Barry Sloane. And the multiplayer promised a novelty that my little gamer heart approved of right away: for the first time in the series, cross-play and shared progression between PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, so nobody is kept away from friends because of the console.
What came next
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare arrived on October 25, 2019 for PS4, Xbox One and PC, with Gunfight among the launch modes. After the beta test, Infinity Ward still tweaked the multiplayer, bringing back the minimap without the enemies’ red dots, which only show up with the UAV. In the second season, the game got Warzone, a free battle royale mode also released as a standalone game. Modern Warfare passed 30 million units sold by September 2020.
