Heads up: on August 6, 2019, Microsoft introduced the Xbox One X Gears 5 Limited Edition bundle on Xbox Wire, and pre-orders opened the same day at participating stores, including the Microsoft Store (the announced US price was US$499). It was the first limited-edition Xbox One X since the Project Scorpio Edition, and the look arrived in style.
The console, designed by The Coalition together with Xbox’s industrial design team, had a dark translucent shell, laser-etched cracks on top, imitating an icy surface, and the golden Locust symbol on the back, with snow passing across it. All inspired by the Omen, the emblem that is the series’ trademark.
What came in the box
The bundle was packed for fans of the franchise: the console, the Xbox Wireless Controller – Kait Diaz Limited Edition, the download of Gears 5 Ultimate Edition, Gears of War Ultimate Edition, Gears of War 2, 3 and 4, one month of Xbox Game Pass and of Xbox Live Gold, plus the Ice Kait and Ice Jack skins. Gears 5 and Gears of War 4 are Xbox Play Anywhere titles, meaning the purchase also counted on Windows 10 PC.
Microsoft also announced themed accessories sold separately: the standalone Kait Diaz controller, set for release on August 20, the Razer Thresher headset, the Razer Turret wireless keyboard and mouse, both in Gears 5 edition, and the Seagate Game Drive 2 TB external HDD. Those with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate could play Gears 5 from September 6, four days before the official launch on September 10.
What came next
Gears 5 came out on September 10, 2019 for Xbox One and PC and received “generally favorable” reviews, according to Metacritic. On to the numbers: the game had 3 million players in its first weekend, the biggest launch in Xbox Game Pass history and the best for a Microsoft first-party game since Halo 4. It later got Xbox Series X improvements, with up to 120 frames per second, and the Hivebusters expansion, released on December 15, 2020.
