Come with me, because this memory is a treat for my little gamer heart: in September 2019, Square Enix released yet another Final Fantasy VII Remake trailer, prepared for that year’s Tokyo Game Show. It was the long-requested recreation of the 1997 PlayStation classic, and each new video left fans dreaming a little more about Midgar.
For those who just arrived, a cute little recap of the road up to that point: the remake was announced at Sony’s E3 2015 conference and went years with almost no new footage. In May 2019, a teaser at State of Play rekindled hope, and the following month Square Enix revealed the release date, March 3, 2020, for PlayStation 4 only. The playable demo taken to E3 2019 was such a hit that it won three Game Critics Awards, including best of the show.
Look what a cutie the premise is: Cloud Strife, a former member of SOLDIER, joins the AVALANCHE group to face Shinra, the company that drains the planet’s energy. Everything was rebuilt with real-time polygonal graphics, in place of the original’s pre-rendered backgrounds, and the story gained more room for Tifa, Barret, Aerith and company. This first game covers only the Midgar part, because the project was conceived as a series.
What came next
The release was delayed from March 3 to April 10, 2020, with a demo of the first chapter released on the PlayStation Store on March 2. It was worth the wait: the game sold more than 3.5 million copies in three days and was highly praised for its graphics, combat and music. On June 10, 2021 the Intergrade version arrived for PlayStation 5, with the extra Yuffie episode, followed by PC in December 2021 and Steam in June 2022. On January 22, 2026, Intergrade also came out for Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S. The sequel, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, was released in 2024, and the final chapter, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, is scheduled for 2027.
