Street Fighter V: Champion Edition review

Review of Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, Capcom's complete fighting game with all released characters and stages, played on PS4 Pro.

Boy, how many years has it been since I played a fighting game with so much enjoyment?

From everything people said in the past and the little I played, SF IV was a hell of a game, with tremendous investment in both graphics and mechanics.

SFV… drinks from the same source. It’s not innovation in either aspect, although it’s competent in carrying on IV’s legacy. Champion Edition comes with all 40 characters released up to the time this review was closed, and that’s already 4 years on the road for V. Capcom, which wobbled quite a bit until a few years ago, has been getting it right one after another. The franchise chose not to innovate and to keep what 4 had already solidified; I can’t antagonize that decision, no matter how hard I try. The different editions are the Street Fighter tradition: Arcade Edition with the first and second seasons of characters, and Champion Edition with those, plus the third and fourth.

Spending the afternoon playing and practicing combos only to get beaten up repeatedly online right after, because by now only the hardcore crowd still plays regularly, is priceless. Playing with the PC crowd is almost guaranteed to give you a headache because apparently there’s an unofficial patch to improve netcode only on their side, and it ends up leaving us in the lurch. With only the PS4 crowd, all you can complain about is that they’re on an old controller, not playing seriously, it’s not their main character, the guy is button-mashing, etc. The usual. It takes absolutely no time to find an online match.

Street Fighter V: Champion Edition doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, but makes perfect use of everything built in IV. At R$103,90 for the expansion and R$28,60 for the base game, the upgrade is worth it for those who were waiting for the complete version to finally come out.
