Resident Evil 3 Remake review

Review of Resident Evil 3 Remake: an action-leaning remake that feels patched together, with Jill as its best asset. Our advice is to wait for a sale.

You saw our launch announcement for the game here. Now on to the review.

Resident Evil 3 Remake is a technical disaster.

Or at least it gives strong signs of being one.

Resident Evil 3 Remake works on a strange threshold. It doesn’t know if it’s horror (spoiler: it isn’t) or action (spoiler: it is). It seems to try to balance the appeal of nostalgia while trying to innovate in gameplay, at the same time clinging to the series’ “roots” (the original 3 was much further from horror and closer to action) and making use of a few timid jump scares.

Mano Menezes (our nickname for Nemesis) has a thousand transformations during the game

For this reason, the game apparently is all over the place. The effort to make the story feel like “all-out action” the whole time is disconcerting, to say the least.
A passage early in the game has Menezes chasing after you… for 25 meters, AT MOST. You start and end the chase without knowing what the hell just happened, and it all ends with Jill closing a shop door, which apparently is one of the few weaknesses of the monster that knocks down walls with one punch.

The ENTIRE opening scene shows only how monstrously strong Nemesis is. And minutes later it throws all of that down the drain.

There is a concept for those who watch films or play games called “suspension of disbelief”: when you give up common sense simply to enjoy what is happening.
But it’s quite hard to take Nemesis seriously when he’s stopped by a shop door.

I said up there that the game seems to be a technical disaster, a patchwork quilt, and that is precisely why: it looks like a series of patches, sometimes to please the old fanbase, sometimes to fit the game’s technical limitation (it would be a spoiler to say more than that).

Lara – I mean – Jill, are you okay?

The story’s greatest redeemer is certainly the character of Jill. Few words, pure hatred, and motivation to spare as she faces the most ridiculous possible forms of a monster that simply won’t die.

I really liked Resident Evil 3 Remake, but my advice is to wait for it to go on a good sale to pick it up.
