On April 16, 2020, less than a month after the launch of DOOM Eternal, id Software and Bethesda opened the game’s Series 2 rewards, dubbed Coffee and Camouflage. It was the shooter’s second season of cosmetic items, and brought new weapon looks, icons, nameplates and character skins for those who kept accumulating experience.

Series 2 stayed live until May 14, 2020. Among the prizes, two drew the most attention: the Camo Slayer and, at the top of the track, the Hipster Arch-Vile Master Collection, a version of the demon who apparently spends more time at the coffee shop than in Hell. The season’s name, of course, comes from that duo.

The good thing about the system is that it required nothing out of the ordinary: experience came from playing the campaign levels, from BATTLEMODE matches, the multiplayer in which each player controls the Slayer or a demon, and from weekly challenges. At the time, Bethesda also said details of Series 3 and the first official patch would arrive in the following weeks.

For those who haven’t followed, DOOM Eternal was released on March 20, 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Stadia. It is the sequel to the 2016 DOOM and the seventh game in the series, and had the franchise’s best opening weekend up to that point.

What came next

The game kept growing with updates. The extra campaign The Ancient Gods, which works as a standalone game, came out in two parts: the first on October 20, 2020 and the second on March 18, 2021. DOOM Eternal got a Nintendo Switch version and, on June 29, 2021, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions, with higher frame rates and ray tracing. It received five nominations at The Game Awards 2020, including Game of the Year. The prequel, DOOM: The Dark Ages, was released in 2025.
