Anyone who played Assassin’s Creed II back in 2009 remembers when Ubisoft launched the Uplay rewards system, which gave items in exchange for in-game achievements. Eleven years later, the company announced the next phase of that story: on October 21, 2020, Ubisoft introduced Ubisoft Connect, which would merge Uplay and Ubisoft Club in one place starting October 29, the same day Watch Dogs: Legion launched.
The idea was to have a single home for all of Ubisoft’s in-game services across every platform: social features, rewards, challenges and activities. The company presented Ubisoft Connect as the start of a commitment to make cross-platform features a standard in the future, citing cross-platform progression in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Immortals Fenyx Rising and Riders Republic. In practice, this meant, for example, carrying progress from a previous-generation console to the new one, or from console to PC. To use it, you just had to link your Ubisoft account to the game.
The new features included a feed with friends’ activities and achievements, personal stats, leaderboards to compare performance and “Smart Intel”, which suggested tips and videos based on what the player was doing in the game, such as recruiting a beekeeper in Watch Dogs: Legion. To celebrate, more than a thousand old Ubisoft Club rewards were unlocked for free for everyone, since several older games would not carry over to the new system.
The service debuted on PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch, arriving on Xbox Series X|S on November 10 and on PlayStation 5 on November 15. Stadia, GeForce Now and Amazon Luna would follow in 2020.
What came next
Ubisoft Connect remains the account and rewards system and, on PC, the store and mandatory launcher for Ubisoft games, even when bought on Steam or the Epic Games Store. The Uplay+ subscription was also renamed and became Ubisoft+.
