Check out this one from the archive: at the end of October 2020, Insomniac Games presented a new suit for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and it was no ordinary outfit. It was the uniform Miles wears in the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), which won the Oscar for best animated feature.
For those who like detail, the announcement promised more than a change of look: according to Insomniac, the suit also changed some of the character’s moves and animations, bringing the film’s feel into the game. Check out the trailer:
The suit came as a pre-order bonus: in North America, editions bought in advance gave immediate access to the Spider-Verse uniform and the T.R.A.C.K. suit, plus three extra skill points and a Gravity Well device. In other countries, the content came in a separate code. And those who didn’t pre-order weren’t left out, because everything could be unlocked by playing the campaign.
The game was a spin-off sequel to 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man, and put Miles defending Harlem in the middle of a war between the Underground’s army, led by the mysterious Tinkerer, and Roxxon. The debut was set for November 2020, on the PlayStation 4 and as a launch game for the PlayStation 5.
What came next
Miles Morales came in strong: it received favorable reviews for its combat, story and technical improvements on the PS5, with its short length as the main caveat. It was the best-selling physical PS5 launch game in the United Kingdom, passed 6.5 million units in July 2021 and reached 14.4 million in June 2023. The PC version came out on November 18, 2022, made by Nixxes, and the story continued in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, released for PS5 in October 2023.
