Heads up: on November 4, 2020, Activision released the pre-load times and the size of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on all platforms. It was a good idea to start clearing space on your drive, because the franchise’s new chapter came in strong on storage too.
Pre-loading on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One started on November 5, at 9 p.m. Pacific time (2 a.m. on November 6 in Brasília). On PC, it was released on November 10, at 10 a.m. Pacific (3 p.m. in Brasília). Those playing on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S had to wait for the consoles to reach stores to download.
The numbers for each platform:
- PlayStation 4: 95 GB
- PlayStation 5: 133 GB
- Xbox One: 93 GB
- Xbox Series X|S: 136 GB
- PC: 35 GB for multiplayer only, 82 GB for the full game and 125 GB to run everything on Ultra
Good news for those tight on space: on all versions you could remove specific modes, such as the campaign and Zombies, and reduce the total size. Just keep in mind that future updates would demand even more space. Before this revision, Activision had recommended 175 GB on PC for all modes, and 250 GB running on Ultra with RTX on.
For anyone just joining: Black Ops Cold War is the 17th main Call of Duty game and the sixth in the Black Ops line, made by Treyarch in partnership with Raven Software. The campaign is set in 1981 and follows CIA agent Russell Adler on the hunt for a Soviet spy named Perseus. The launch was set for November 13, 2020.
What came next
The game came out on the scheduled day for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC, received favorable reviews (a 76 average on Metacritic) and was the best-selling game of 2020 in the United States. The campaign and Zombies were the most praised, while the multiplayer divided opinions. The line’s direct sequel, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, came out in October 2024.
