Heads up, this is one of the most unusual stories of that November 2020: if you were an Amazon Prime subscriber and played Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, you could swap Eivor’s raven for a pigeon. That is right, the common pigeon, the one from the town square.
The freebie was part of a free cosmetic pack from Prime Gaming, the gaming perks program of Amazon’s subscription. All you had to do was link your game account to your Prime Gaming account to unlock the items. According to Eurogamer, the pack included a mythical-quality gear set, decoration pieces for the ship, a horse and, the star of the show, the pigeon skin.
For those who have not played: in Valhalla, Eivor’s companion is Sýnin, a raven that flies over the area, marks enemies and helps plan the attack before the brawl begins. With the skin, the raven becomes a pigeon. To use it, all you had to do was go to the stables and the aviary of the settlement, the base the player builds in England, and choose the new bird.
Now, here is the catch for anyone expecting some bonus: the pigeon had no special ability whatsoever. And, a detail Eurogamer found funny, it still cawed like a raven. It was pure fun, but it fit the game’s English setting.
Valhalla had arrived on November 10, 2020 for PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Stadia, with the PS5 version two days later. In its UK debut, the game sold twice as many physical copies in the first week as Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
What came next
Valhalla became a long-lived game. It received the Wrath of the Druids expansion, which takes Eivor to Ireland, and The Siege of Paris, in France. In March 2022 Dawn of Ragnarök arrived, focused on Norse mythology, and in August 2022 came the free mode The Forgotten Saga, with a roguelike structure. Let us just say the pigeon stayed as a keepsake.
