After years of waiting, Cyberpunk 2077 was just weeks from reaching stores when CD Projekt RED, the Polish studio famous for The Witcher series, published in November 2020 a special episode of Night City Wire, the online show it had been using to showcase the game since the cancellation of E3 2020. The focus this time was Microsoft’s consoles: the video featured gameplay snippets captured on the Xbox One X and the Xbox Series X.
It was the first time the public saw the open-world RPG actually running on a console, and what stands out in the video is how Night City remained full of detail even off the PC: the neon signs, the traffic, the crowds on the sidewalks. The city is divided into regions such as the corporate center, Watson, Westbrook, Heywood, Pacifica and Santo Domingo, and the player lives V, a mercenary with customizable appearance, voice and background.

At the time, the launch was set for December 10, 2020, after three delays: the game was announced for April 16, 2020, moved to September 17, then November 19 and, finally, December.
What came next
The video did not tell the whole story. At launch, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions, the base models, suffered from bugs and poor performance, and CD Projekt apologized and offered refunds. Sony even pulled the game from the PlayStation Store between December 2020 and June 2021. The native Xbox Series X|S and PS5 versions only came out on February 15, 2022, with a free upgrade for those who had the previous version.
With many updates, the animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and the Phantom Liberty expansion, released in September 2023, the game’s reputation turned around: it passed 40 million copies sold by July 2026.
