Listen up: on December 8, 2020, Microsoft and The Coalition announced Gears 5: Hivebusters, the campaign expansion for Gears 5, set for release on December 15. It was the first Xbox Game Studios campaign expansion to land on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on launch day, on console, PC and Android.
For those who didn’t connect the name with the people: the Hivebusters are the trio from the original Gears 5’s Escape mode, the one where players let themselves be captured by the Swarm to enter the hives and destroy everything from the inside with venom bombs. In the expansion, Lahni, Keegan and Mac, nicknamed Scorpio Squad, take on their first mission together in the secret Hivebuster program, a suicide mission to destroy a hive that may be the key to saving Sera.
Check out the trailer:
The campaign is about three hours long and takes place on the volcanic islands of Galangi, full of lava, sandy beaches, Swarm and a new predator. For the first time, the characters’ Ultimate Abilities appear in a campaign, with upgrades. The story was written by Kurtis Wiebe, creator of the Rat Queens comic and author of the 2019 Gears of War: Hivebusters comics, on which the expansion is based. Supporting characters such as Colonel Victor Hoffman and Hana Cole, Cole Train’s daughter, make appearances.
For those without Game Pass, the expansion was sold for US$ 19.99 on the Microsoft store and Steam, or inside Gears 5: Game of the Year Edition, for US$ 59.99. It runs on PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, with next-generation optimizations: faster loading, Quick Resume and 4K HDR on the Series X. There are 210 Gamerscore in new achievements, including finishing everything in three-player co-op.
