Heads up: a few days before launch, IGN released the first 18 minutes of The Medium running on Xbox Series X in 4K. It is the new psychological horror game from Bloober Team, the Polish studio behind Layers of Fear and Observer, and it arrived on January 28, 2021 for Xbox Series X|S and PC, straight into Game Pass for subscribers on both platforms at no extra cost.
The game had been scheduled for December 10, 2020, but the pandemic pushed the date to January. The story is set in Poland in 1999. Marianne is a medium who helps lost souls find rest and keeps having the same dream: a man shooting a girl at the edge of a lake. After losing her adoptive father, she gets a call from a man named Thomas, who says he knows the origin of her powers, and sets a meeting at the Niwa, an abandoned communist-era resort where a massacre took place.
The clever twist is the two-world gameplay. Marianne exists in the real and spirit planes at the same time, and in several sections the screen splits to show both sides, which feeds directly into puzzle solving. Psychic powers also work against threats and are recharged at energy points called spirit wells. The fixed third-person camera is a declared homage to Silent Hill and Resident Evil, and the soundtrack is by Akira Yamaoka, the Silent Hill composer, along with Arkadiusz Reikowski. Troy Baker voices the villain, the Maw.
For those who enjoy heavy-atmosphere horror, the video is a good sample of the pacing: lots of exploration, lots of tension and little fighting.
What came next
The Medium came out on the scheduled date and received mixed to favorable scores; IGN gave it 8/10. Bloober Team said the game paid for itself in a few days. On September 3, 2021 it arrived on PlayStation 5, and in 2025 a movie adaptation was announced, produced by Gary Dauberman.
